Southeastern Tech students in Jill Lehman’s Fish and Wildlife Management program recently completed a course in all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety.

In a field where ATVs are widely-used, practical tools, ATV safety is an integral part of student learning, Lehman said.

“Understanding the hazards of ATV operation prepares the students to take steps to avoid becoming an accident statistic,” said Lehman.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were 317 reported deaths and an estimated 115,000 injuries requiring emergency medical care related to ATV use in 2010.

“The wise ATV rider knows that accidents are not just chance happenings,” said Lehman. “A large number of accidents are caused by poor riding decisions, [like] riding with a passenger on a single-rider ATV, attempting stunts, wheelies or jumps, moving too fast, and recklessness.

“Most accidents can be prevented with proper training, proper planning and responsible behavior.”
